Journey Front Cover

Journey is a series of 48 photographs by photographer Matthew Hammond that utilise the visual device of a bus window to survey the city in a linear format. Travelling edge to edge through the centre of the urban environment we as viewers are able to link, compare and evaluate the vastly different social, spatial and architectural worlds of the city. The bus is perhaps the only object that links these disparate environments.

British Landmarks

British Landmarks revisits sites that are both harrowing and banal, sites that are ingrained in the British national consciousness, assessing the role of collective memory in our society.

News is a form of social tourism, where the audience view a version of Britain through their television screen, in newspapers and magazines. This series of photographs was made using disposable cameras, visiting that place you've always seen on the TV, creating snapshots that no longer remove the subject matter from daily life as the visual codes of the mass media do. British Landmarks examines the languages and codes of photography itself and the ways in which we use and receive it.

Closer to us than any ideal heritage site, British Landmarks appear mundane and awkwardly familiar.
